Según Túlio Espanca, este pueblo tuvo el nombre primitivo de Aldea de la Iglesia. Fue fundada en el mismo lugar donde estuvo implantada una villa romana, siendo hoy el vestigio romano más importante del municipio de Estremoz.
La iglesia parroquial fue comenda de la Orden de Avis y tuvo visita eclesiástica en 1534.
Y en el caso de las mujeres.
En este momento presenta características arquitectónicas comunes al siglo XVII, aunque la capilla mayor revela una traza más antigua. En la frontera existen algunos azulejos policromos igualmente seiscentistas, tal como en el interior, al pie de la nave. También tiene un altar de relevante interés artístico, con retablo de talla dorada de finales del siglo XVIII, del estilo rococó.
