Het werd gebouwd door de Senaat van Estremoz en profiteerde van een van de belangrijkste bronnen in de binnenstad, gelegen in het zuidwesten van Rossio Marquês de Pombal, de bron van Fonte Nova.
Het imposante meer, ongeveer 40 meter lang, wordt bevoorraad door een ondergronds kanaal dat door de Rossio Marquês de Pombal loopt, die uitmondt in een marmeren schelp.
Het bekende standbeeld van de "Gadanha", van dezelfde hoogte van het meer, is afkomstig van de Congregatie van de Congregados, die pas halverwege de 19e eeuw in het midden van het meer is getransponeerd. Het is ook vanaf deze tijd dat het standbeeld plotseling verandert in betekenis. Vertegenwoordigend, primitief, wordt de god Saturnus, symbool van overvloed en overvloed, bekend zoals het nu is.
En het is in feite net als Gadanha dat toevallig bekend en erkend wordt door iedereen, symbolisch voor de kortstondige en vluchtigheid van het leven, zoals blijkt uit de inscriptie op het voetstuk.
Belangrijk kenmerk van de barokperiode in Estremoz, presenteert een ironische en tegenstrijdige ambiguïteit. De 'Gadanha', die de vluchtigheid en snelheid van de Tijd vertegenwoordigt, eindigt uiteindelijk eeuwig en blijft in de collectieve herinnering aan de stad.

Toen de Rossio van São Brás in 1688 een majestueus meer en een fontein zag ontstaan die volgens de bronnen van de achttiende eeuw in staat was 'de dorst van ons hele leger te stillen'. Estremoz kon zich niet voorstellen dat dit een van hun ex libris zou worden.
