Il a été construit par le Sénat d'Estremoz, tirant parti de l'une des sources les plus importantes du centre-ville, située dans le sud-ouest de Rossio Marquês de Pombal, la source de Fonte Nova.
L’imposant lac, d’une longueur de 40 mètres environ, est alimenté par un canal souterrain traversant le Rossio Marquês de Pombal, qui se jette dans une coquille de marbre.
La célèbre statue du "Gadanha", de la même hauteur du lac, provient de la Congrégation des Congrégados, n'ayant été transposée au centre du lac qu'au milieu du siècle XIX. C'est aussi à partir de cette époque que la statue change, tout à coup, de sens. La représentation primitive du dieu Saturne, symbole de l'abondance et de l'abondance, devient connue telle qu'elle est aujourd'hui.
Et c’est en fait comme Gadanha qu’il est connu et reconnu de tous, symbolisant l’éphémère et la fugacité de la vie, comme en témoigne l’inscription sur le piédestal.
Marque importante de la période baroque à Estremoz, présente une ambiguïté ironique et contradictoire. La "Gadanha", qui représente la fugacité et la célérité du temps, finit par être éternelle, restant dans la mémoire collective de la ville.

Quand, en 1688, le Rossio de São Brás vit émerger un lac majestueux et une fontaine qui, selon des sources du XVIIIe siècle, était capable "d'étancher la soif de toute notre armée". Estremoz ne pouvait imaginer que cela deviendrait l'une des leur ex libris.
