E 'stato costruito dal Senato di Estremoz, sfruttando una delle sorgenti più importanti del centro città che si trova nel sud-ovest del Rossio Marquês de Pombal, la fonte di Fonte Nova.
L'imponente lago, lungo circa 40 metri, è alimentato da un canale sotterraneo che attraversa il Rossio Marquês de Pombal, che sfocia in un guscio di marmo.
La famosa statua della "Gadanha", della stessa altezza del lago, è originaria della Congregazione dei Congregati, essendo stata trasposta al centro del lago solo verso la metà del secolo XIX. È anche da questo momento che la statua cambia, improvvisamente, di significato. Rappresentando, in primis, il dio Saturno, simbolo di abbondanza e abbondanza, diventa noto come lo è oggi.
Ed è, infatti, come Gadanha che è conosciuto e riconosciuto da tutti, simboleggiando l'effimero e la fugacità della vita, come dimostra l'iscrizione sul piedistallo.
Segno importante del periodo barocco in Estremoz, presenta un'ambiguità ironica e contraddittoria. Il "Gadanha", che rappresenta la fugacità e la rapidità del tempo, finisce per essere eterno, rimanendo nella memoria collettiva della città.

Quando, nel 1688, il Rossio di São Brás vide emergere un maestoso lago e una fontana che, secondo fonti settecentesche, era in grado di "estinguere la sete di tutto il nostro esercito". Estremoz non poteva immaginare che questo sarebbe diventato uno dei loro ex libris.
