Porto de Galinhas
Porto de Galinhas is a small beach town in the municipality of Ipojuca, Pernambuco and located 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of the state capital, Recife.
The area is beautiful with amazing reefs. Hotels range from cozy "pousadas" to five-star tourist resorts.
Its fame is due mainly to natural beauties like pools of clear and warm water formed between corals, estuaries, mangroves, white sand and coconut trees.
Initially, the beach was called Puerto Rico, due to its abundance of redwood.
At the height of slavery in Brazil, it was the main point of illegal slave trade in northeastern Brazil. Often, they arrived hidden under the chicken cages from Angola. The arrival of the illegal slaves to the port used to be announced by the phrase "there is new hen in the port!" In this way, the beach of Puerto Rico became known as Porto de Galinhas.
