The history of Turbo began with the arrival of the Spanish conquerors to the Gulf of Urabá in 1501. Rodrigo de Bastidas and Juan de la Cosa were part of these expeditions. After a significant sequence of looting, burning and killing of indigenous people, the area was left to its own devices for several centuries.

At the end of the 18th century, the area gained prosperity due to the reactivation of trade. On August 28, 1840, the then president, Don José Ignacio de Márquez approved the creation of Turbo. Seven years later, under the administration of Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera, it was elevated to the category of parochial district. In (1848), the municipality came under the jurisdiction of the state of Antioquia, although in 1850 it passed to Chocó and, six years later, to the jurisdiction of the state of Cauca. Finally, in 1910, he returned to Antioquia.

Turbo is a Colombian city located in the Urabá subregion of the Antioquia department and capital of this Antioquia region, it is also a Special Port District. It limits to the north with the Caribbean Sea and the municipality of Necoclí; to the east with the municipalities of San Pedro de Urabá and Apartadó and with the department of Córdoba; to the south with the municipalities of Carepa, Chigorodó and Mutatá and to the west with the department of Chocó. The municipality of Currulao was recently segregated from Turbo, but the Superior Court of Antioquia on November 28, 2008 notified that the Departmental Assembly was not the competent authority, so Currulao was once again part of the district. This is because the Congress of the Republic elevated Turbo to the category of district before the Departmental Assembly segregated Currulao, therefore, it is the Congress that must decide whether or not the new municipality is created.
