The Trinitatiskirche is the new, newly built Protestant church in Cologne on the left bank of the Rhine. You are in the old old town at Filzengraben, in the other one at Heumarkt. Concerns about the disenfranchisement of the inner city are no longer held in their community church services, usually church services on certain occasions, concerts and. The Trinity Church serves as a place of worship for the evangelical deaf community. The cultural partner is the WDR radio choir.
After the personal occupation of Cologne in 1794, Protestant Christians were also allowed to practice their religion freely. As a church building, they were given the proper monastery church of the Antonite Order.
If Cologne belonged to the war that became Prussian in 1815, the part of the Protestant areas belonged to the city. And so the Antoniterkirche became too small despite all the proportions of around 800 visitors. People acquired the Protestant community of Cologne in 1850 with the care of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Property for the construction of a second church at Filzengraben on the site of the St. Lucia Monastery. The king already indicated the tendency of the building in advance: In a city like Cologne with its many other Romanesque and Gothic church buildings, a Protestant church building in the architectural style of these significant ones belongs. Therefore, only the style of an early church basilica would come into question. It is therefore not surprising that no draft of the disabled responsible architect's knowledge found general interests. Some have the design of the entity commissioned Berlin architect Friedrich August Stüler 1855 their own design. Before that, Stüler had managed churches in and in Berlin in an appropriate style. And so the Trinity Church also belongs to Stüler's classicistic sense of style. It is a basilica with galleries in the side aisles. Because the church was at war on the front of the house, she built chairs high up so that more light could enter the room through the window. In front of the street-side entrance, a portico stretching over the entire front was heard based on northern Italian models. The square-shaped tower, which is 41 meters high, was placed in the background of the right next to the choir area. Due to its darker brick lining, the light tuff facade is also safe from the church building and thus leans even more clearly on the architectural style of the northern Italian basilicas with their campaniles.
Construction began with the laying of the foundation stone on October 28, 1857, and on June 3, 1860, the church with around 1,000 seats was consecrated. In the following cases, the equipment is the same as in 1861 with a five-part bell by the foundry Christian Claren from Sieglar and a three-manual Ibach organ. In 1899 the church was renovated. In 1943, an air raid quickly heard the church. The reconstruction from 1952 to 1965. The Trinity Church has been a listed building since 1982.
The church is well known in the Cologne art scene. The church interior and its galleries will be used for exhibitions and representations of modern art and for artistic installations. After the installation of the new organ in 2009/2010, the focus is on musical events. In 2011, for example, the Cologne Opera is a guest in the Trinity Church with a production.
The walls with their figural decorations, the marble baptismal font and three of the five bells have been preserved from the time the church was built. Altar, pulpit and cross without the work of the Cologne artist Kurt Wolf von Borries without the year 1962. Von Borries as a coffered ceiling. In the same year Wolfhard Röhrig created the artistic glazing.
Since the church is only a hundred meters from the Antoniterkirche, in which there is a large organ, none of the spatial authorizations were established after the reconstruction. It is about the possibility to own the organ built by the Bonn organ builder Klais in 1987 for the Aachen Trinity Church. The removal, conversion and installation by the Klais company take about half a year. According to the company, a project with political dimensions is extremely fast. The instrument has three manuals for 44 sounding registers and 3000 pipes. The purchase and installation cost half a million euros, which were raised through donations and sponsors. On Sunday, January 24th 2010, the organ was used in a service and with the world premiere of this part of a composition Trinity - Triple Variations (picture) by the Cologne composer Michael Ostrzyga by the professor for organ and head of the department for evangelical music and dance Cologne , Johannes Geffert, solemnly put into service.
