La pianificazione di questo teatro è iniziata 1 maggio 1916. Dopo diversi incontri, ha formato una commissione per la costruzione del teatro, con diverse personalità legate al Estremoz, tra cui il Dr. Marques Crespo, Dr. José Rosado da Fonseca, il Carlos Frederico Luna e José Maria Reynolds Graça Zagalo.
La terra di impianto di questa proprietà è stata donata dal Sig. João Reynolds. Era situato in un layout di strada (ora Avenida 25 de Abril), che era stato "conquistato" il muro del XVII secolo a pochi anni fa, ed era una zona in cui la città di Estremoz poi ampliata in tempi relativamente brevi.
Quando fu presa la terra, il piano della proprietà fu eseguito da Ernesto da Maia. Le opere a loro volta sono dovute a Manuel da Silva che ha eseguito il contratto di falegnameria, pannelli pubblicitari, ecc. La magnifica modellazione in gesso, il lavoro di António Martins Esteves e le pitture decorative, sono uscite dalle mani di un pittore di Portalegre, Benvindo Ceia. La prima illuminazione elettrica è stata opera di José Luís Vergas da Rocha.
L'inaugurazione ebbe luogo il 22 luglio 1922, con la presenza del famoso artista portoghese, Amélia Rey Colaço. C'erano 816 azionisti. Successivamente, il Comune ha rilevato questo gioiello del Teatro Portoghese.

E 'stato assegnato il nome del Alentejo "Bernardim Ribeiro," in onore di questo poeta cinquecentesco che ha scritto così bene sui loro amori con la cugina Aonia suppone estremocense Joana Tavares Zagalo che sono morti nel Convento delle Clarisse Estremoz .
