Located in the historic center of Quito, it displays on its main altar the original sculpture of the Virgin of Quito, prepared by Bernardo de Legarda, whose gigantic replica is seen on the Panecillo hill.

The Catholic temple, one of the largest colonial architectural complexes, began construction around 1550 and was founded on December 6 of the same year as San Francisco de Quito by Sebastián de Benalcázar.

The complex is completed with the convent, which highlights the architectural beauty of the main cloister, organized around the immense courtyard and two overlapping galleries featuring full-size 17th-century works by Nazareno del Gran Poder by Father Carlos, following Modelo Sevilla namesake. Like all temples in the city, it is full of artwork because Quito was the most famous center for sculpture and painting in Spanish America.
