This beautiful and solid masonry construction was built by the Municipality of São José del Rei for a triple function: supplying the village with drinking water, through the spouts at the front; washing clothes, using the right side; and water fountain for the horses, on the left side. The facade is very well worked with decorative stone motifs, such as the Portuguese Crown coat of arms and a niche with an image of São José de Botas. Three frowns decorate the spouts. In the Bosque da Mãe d’Água, located behind, there is the spring that supplies the fountain and the water reaches the spouts through a stone aqueduct. Flogging and prison sentences were envisaged in the early 19th century by the City Council, for anyone who used it inappropriately. Slave games and riots were forbidden, and they could not sharpen their knives there either.
