In a privileged place strategically-defensive, with easy access to the river and surrounded by fertile soils for agriculture, the castle was part of the so-called Tagus Line to medieval times. There are only a few sections of its walls and the so-called Cabaças Tower.
Mountain castle, with elements of the Romanesque style and the Gothic style, was originally integrated by the enclosure of the alcáçova and the wall of the village, defended by a barbican. They also had around the neighborhoods bordering Ribeira and Alfange.
Classified as a Property of Public Interest, what remains of the medieval castle has come to be the target of conservation works.
