Its origin dates back to 1776. In the hacienda ´´Los Pinos´´, appeared –according to tradition- two white mules loaded with boxes, in which two carved wooden images were found, with the inscription ´´Valle de Locumba ´´, and another that said ´´For the people of Sama´´.
In the eighteenth century in the sunny valley of Locumba, a white mule appears on September 14, according to the ancients of the place, carrying on its back two boxes - one large and one small - containing two images of Christ crucified in which It was indicated that the big box was for Sama and the small one for Locumba. The inhabitants looked for the mule driver and the owner of the mule but they did not find them, the mule had arrived with an agile step, stopping under the shadows of a palm tree and approached him. The residents saw the boxes, opened them, and realizing that it was bigger than the other, they decided to keep this one.
They loaded the mule with the small box and tried to lower it trying to take that box to Sama, but the mule fell to the ground as if weighed down and no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't move the mule. Finally, the people decided to keep the small box containing the crucified Christ and send the big one to Sama. The mule was changed boxes and the mule began again at a brisk pace towards Sama until he was no longer seen.
This is how the little Christ wanted to stay in Locumba, to be venerated in the Sanctuary where the Lord wants to pour out his graces, and the big Christ stayed in Sama. Why? - We ask ourselves - This is how the Lord wanted it, so that His will to stay in Locumba and bless every person who with sincere faith approaches Him to ask for something.
Later, in the small town that exists there, the Lord began to pour out his Grace and thus the town consecrated him to Christ crucified as patron, on May 13, 1784.
The temple where the Lord is was totally destroyed by the rains, but nothing happened to the image of the Lord.
The first Bishop of Tacna, Mons. Carlos Masías, forms a committee for the construction of a new temple and later, Bishop Alfonso Zaplana, the second Bishop of the Diocese, built the temple that today shelters the Lord of Locumba and that welcomes so many pilgrims who They go in search of the Grace of the Lord. This means that every year and especially in the month of September (for the 14th) the agglomeration of pilgrims has become a religious tradition that includes: the practice of the sacrament of reconciliation, the celebration of the Eucharist, the participation of the procession, carrying holy water and some image of the Lord of Locumba, asking for a blessing for the family.
In the city of Locumba, located 80 km northwest of the city of Tacna (1 hour, 30 minutes by car), capital of the province of Jorge Basadre Province, there is the Sanctuary of the Lord of Locumba also called ´´Señor of the Burned Feet´´.
The same atmosphere of the town of Locumba favors prayer and invites a personal encounter with the Lord of life. It is a party without liquor, without worldly dancing. A group of priests spend their time caring for pilgrims pastorally: they administer the sacrament of forgiveness, bless people, celebrate Holy Mass ... In Locumba, all people have the opportunity to express their faith, no one is marginalized there. Meanwhile the companies of religious dancers offer their dance to God as a prayer.
