At the time of independence, San Carlos was the most important Valladian population, with a marked peninsular tendency and constitutes the center of the Spanish reaction led by Colonel Aramburú. In 1813, Tristan's officers sacked the city and destroyed everything so that it would not fall into the hands of the patriotic forces that, after the Battle of Tucumán, were advancing toward Salta.
The construction of its current church began in 1790. It preserves bulk images brought from Upper Peru since the 17th century and also from masses originating in Europe. It is a national historical monument since 1941.
Location: Calchaquí Valley (in Salta)
