In 1865, Juan Francisco Tarragona acquired a sector of the wide country estate that belonged to Juana Isidora González, which stretched from Victoria Street (today Hipólito Yrigoyen) to Rivadavia, extending west to beyond the contemporary José Mármol. The eastern limit of the same formed a narrow alley that only in 1889 was widened to give rise to Estebarena Street, later Arts and Crafts and finally Quintino Bocayuva.
Precisely with the subdivision of this villa, the San Carlos Passage will be born at No. 151 of that artery, between Don Bosco and Hipólito Yrigoyen, with exclusively pedestrian access, framed between the ochavas of two twin buildings. Sadly, one was modified by ´´postmodern passion´´, savagely deforming the architectural integrity of the passage.
In its approximate 50 meters, which enter the block -without exit- some fifteen houses are lined up, numbered from 1 to 70; its fronts preserve the appearance of Buenos Aires from the 19th century. The touch of the old lanterns, the long windows with high shutters and ornate balconies, give the feeling of transporting us back in time.
The rays of the sun, which fall perpendicular at siesta time, mark deep and immobile shadows on its central street, accentuating an atmosphere of society and perpetual calm.
Carlos Borromeo - who gave the name to the passage, the temple and also the area for a long time - was born in Lombardy (Italy) in 1538; he was ordained a priest at the age of 25, eventually reaching the archdiocese of the city of Milan. During his tenure, he produced profound reforms in the customs of the clergy, earning praise and hostilities from those who felt affected, to the point that during a mass he was wounded by a harquebus bullet.
Don Bosco Street in Capital Federal. Buenos Aires.
It is one of the oldest passages on the Buenos Aires checkerboard. San Carlos was the original name of Don Bosco Street and of the temple that stands in the adjoining block, consecrated to San Carlos Borromeo and where the Salesian priests also installed the first School of Arts and Crafts for children.
