St George's was built by the French in 1650. This is evident from the many red-roofed houses in the city. The city changed location in 1705. In 1885 it became the capital of the British colony of the Windward Islands and remained so until 1958. After the independence of Granada in 1974, it became the capital of the country .

Saint George´s is the capital of Granada. In 1999 its population was 7,500, with a population center of 33,000 people. Its main exports are cocoa, nutmeg and mace. Saint George's was the capital of the former British colony of the Windward Islands. It is one of the most beautiful Caribbean cities of colonial French style, cobbled streets, churches, fortresses. The National Museum is in what used to be the French army barracks. The city is surrounded by a crater slope of an ancient volcano and is in a hoseshoe shape of harbor. The city is home to St. George's University. The main exports are cocoa and nutmeg.

In 2004, Saint George's and the rest of Grenada were severely affected by Hurricane Ivan. The hurricane left significant destruction across the island and paralyzed much of the island's infrastructure. It is estimated that around 90% of homes on the islands have been damaged and the nutmeg trees, which are critical to Grenada's economy, were devastated. A year later, with the help of international donors in (Canada, the United States, and the European Union), Grenada has seen a major turnaround in reconstruction efforts. For the year 2007, as planned, Granada has participated in the celebration of the 2007 Cricket World Cup.
