The Puerta de Tierra is an architectural monument that represents a stronghold of what was the entrance wall to the city of Cádiz. Built by the academic architect Torcuato Cayón in the 18th century, the façade is carved in marble and is conceived more as a religious altarpiece than as a military fortification.
It is one of the most significant monuments of the city that currently separates the Old Town (popularly known as ´´Cádiz´´ or ´´Cádiz Cádiz´´) and the modern area (popularly known as ´´Puerta Tierra´ ´ or ´´Extramuros´´) of the city.
In the 16th century the first wall was built in this area, in 1574 an extension was made to protect it with two bastions. In the 18th century it acquired its definitive appearance. In the center of the construction there is a marble doorway designed by José Barnola in 1756, conceived more as a religious altarpiece than as a military fortification, it was executed under the direction of Torcuato Cayón. For the façade that leads into the city, a marble portico was built as a triumphal arch.
The Torreón de Puerta de Tierra was built at the end of 1850 to serve as tower number 57 of the ´´Línea de telegrafía optico de Andalucía´´ (by José María Mathé), which could send messages from the Ministry of the Interior ( in Madrid) to Cádiz in almost two hours, weather conditions permitting. There are many images and some written texts that show that this optical tower began to function from 1851 until the end of 1857, when it was replaced by the electric telegraphy poles. The telegraphic parts were destined to the governor of the province of Cádiz, but sometimes they were published in local newspapers such as El Nacional or the Official Gazette of the Province. The Torreón de Puerta de Tierra, although it has now been forgotten, was known at the end of the 19th century as the ´´Torre Mathé´´, in memory of the director of the Optical Telegraphy Lines (who also created the Telegraph Corps in 1855) .
