The fabulous Prague Zoo is located in a wavy and forested area of the capital. In 2008, the Forbes gazette rated it as the 7th best ZOO in the world. The Garden covers an area of 60 hectares, of which 50 hectares is the exhibition area of animals. The Prague Zoo was opened in 1931, and at the time had 200 animals. Today, the Prague Zoo is proud of its 670 species and nearly 5,000 animals.
Lately, new pavilions have been added: The Indonesian Jungle, where you will find the Komodo dragons, one of the endangered species, the Pantanal of birds, Aquatic World, where the rare Indian gaviais are, and eventually the island of the monkeys or the most important pavilion recently, the Valley of the Elephants with a large herd of elephants and the hippopotamus pavilion. In the spring of 2014, a new pavilion will be inaugurated, the giant salamander-of-china, a species under imminent threat of extinction. The Prague Zoo is the only zoo in Europe that breeds this species. In fact the most popular is the gorilla family, whose restless descendants are loved by all who see them.
Throughout the year, the Prague Zoo offers its visitors opportunities to participate in animal feeding, guided tours, a special program to become a zoo creator, as well as other experiences programs for children. In the indicated months, interested parties can register to participate in an attractive night visit to the zoo.
The Prague Zoo has gained fame in professional circles for the creation of the Przewalski race horse, which is returning successfully in its original habitat in the vast deserts of Mongolia. The rescue project of these majestic animals was started here, and many of the wild horses now living in Mongolia have left the herds raised in this zoo.
