It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983. The work on his church began in 1735 and took 10 years to complete. It was built in sandstone, in three stages: the nave, the tower and the portico. Records from the period describe the decoration of its interior with gilded altars in wood and numerous sculptures made by the Indians in wood, many today in the Museum of the Missions. The responsible for the work was the Italian Jesuit priest Gean Battista Primoli and the influence of Baroque architecture is present in its construction.
