Everything seemed to indicate that attempts at emancipation by the Chilean patriots were unsuccessful when, on January 5, 1817, the Andes army was preparing to cross the mountain range. The military forces had as general of the liberating troops the Virgin of Carmen. After crossing the mountain barrier and on the eve of combat, the combatants asked for the help of the sacred image. A year later, in Maipú, the final battle was held by Supreme Director O'Higgins.
The combatants gathered at the Cathedral and renewed their oath to have the Virgin of Carmen as patron, promising that if the victory was consolidated, they would build a temple on the same battlefield. Victory crowned the efforts of the patriots and O'Higgins laid the foundation stone of the future temple. The temple was built and was blessed on April 5, 1892.
In 1923 she was named patron saint of Chile and in 1926 she was solemnly crowned.
It is located at Avenida Monumento Nº 1777 in Maipú, Santiago.
