It was built between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century, since the first documentary reference we know of this church concerns the Confraternity of Our Lady of the Conception (1636). Shortly thereafter, in 1642, the documentary process concerning the institution from a chapel to Manuel Gil, inside the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, outside the walls of Vila de Monforte.
It is the site of an important religious ceremony held annually on 8 December, to which a night procession is associated. It also has a religious confraternity called "Confraria de Nossa Senhora da Conceição".
It is classified as Property of Public Interest, through Decree No. 8/83 of January 24.
