This territory was part of Nuevo Santander and included what would become Tamaulipas, part of Nuevo Leon and southern Texas; It was one of the last provinces of northern New Spain. Now Laredo is one of the few Spanish colonies that survived north of the river.
With the annexation of Texas in 1845, Laredo moved to the United States, there was war, and at the time several prominent residents of Laredo asked Laredo to remain a Mexican people. Many of these people who wanted to retain their citizenship crossed the river to settle on the Mexican side. On July 15, Andrés Martínez, Laredo's last mayor, announced the new dividing line. Thus, part of these men founded the population of Nuevo Laredo in 1848. With the loss of San Agustín de Laredo Village, incorporated into Texas law, the government moved south and the new city was named Villa de Nuevo. Laredo
