The Research Center for Natural History and Archeology of Maranhão, an organ linked to the State Department of Culture, officially celebrates on March 27, 10 years of pioneering implementation in the State where it develops through its technical staff, working in the fields of Paleontology , Archeology and Ethnology, actions aimed at knowledge, appreciation and heritage preservation, such as, currently in the area of Archeology: survey of rock art sites, the establishment of the Tupiguarani occupation process in the state and the coordinated project “Living on the Waters” by Deusdédit Carneiro Leite Filho that takes up the theme of Maranhão's stearing, unique local archaeological sites in Brazilian Archeology.

However, since its founding, CPHNAMA has inaugurated the systematic practice, until then non-existent in the State, of research of rescue, monitoring and rescue of sites in the interior and in the capital where the first archaeological excavation was carried out in the Historic Center of São Luís. , the agency has been increasing institutional exchanges with the participation of its team in national partnership projects, as well as offering support and institutional endorsement for Contract Archeology research. In the professional field, he has supervised university interns who mostly form the new generation of local researchers.

With regard to Ethnology, CPHNAMA has been systematically conducting research and disseminating the material culture, the traditional festivals and ceremonies that characterize the indigenous ethnicities present in Maranhão, celebrated annually in the event “Week of Indigenous Peoples in Maranhão” since 2007. Such event has contributed to give visibility to the great linguistic-cultural diversity of the Tenetehara, Ka´apor, Awá, Gavião, Krikati, Canela, Timbira and Krenyê.
