Founded in 1792 under the name of Royal Museum (Konglig Museum), the current Renaissance-style building was opened in 1866. It was on this occasion that the museum received its new name.
The largest and most important Swedish art museum, whose history dates back to the 9th century.
It has approximately 16,000 paintings and sculptures, as well as some 30,000 art objects and a world-renowned graphic collection. The national museum also manages the artworks of many castles such as Gripsholm, Drottningholm, Strömsholm, Rosersberg and Ulriksdal, but also Gustavsberg's porcelain museum. Nineteenth-century Dutch masterpieces and 18th-century French art belong to the collections. The focus is naturally on Swedish art from the 16th to the 20th century.
It houses about half a million drawings dating from 1500 to 1900, a collection of porcelain objects, paintings, sculptures and works of modern art. Among the artists on display are Rembrandt (The Oath of the Batavians), Rubens, Goya, Renoir, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin or also the Swedish Carl Larsson, to name a few.
The museum also exhibits temporary exhibitions, many of which have gained international renown, such as the one dedicated to Rembrandt in 1956, the Spanish Grand Masters in 1959, or the tenth Council of Europe exhibition dedicated to Queen Cristina of Sweden.
