Il a été déclaré monument national en 1969.
Le musée a été créé en 1911. Il contient actuellement des échantillons représentatifs des différentes périodes de l'histoire du Chili. Le bâtiment est néoclassique avec des éléments toscans.
Le musée possède 18 salles d’exposition permanentes regroupant plus de 1 600 collections, notamment des pièces archéologiques, du mobilier, des instruments de musique, des peintures, des armes et des objets d’artisanat. Il possède également une salle spéciale pour exposer sa collection numismatique et la salle du gouverneur pour des expositions temporaires et des conférences.
