The Montserrat Sanctuary is located on the hill of the same name and can be accessed on foot through a centuries-old eucalyptus forest, by cable car or funicular. The panoramic view of the city of Bogota is impressive.
Cerro de Monserrate and Cerro de Guadalupe constitute the so-called tutelary hills of Bogota. Montserrat has an elevation of 3152 meters above sea level (meters above sea level). In 1640, a chapel dedicated to Santa Maria da Cruz de Monserrate was built on top of this mountain and since then the place has been a place of pilgrimage. In 1657, renovations were made in the church that gave it the look it has today.
The basilica that is currently at the top is a Catholic shrine. Therein lies an image of Christ, who is the object of veneration and pilgrimage, The Fallen Lord of Montserrat, which refers to one of the stages of the Viacrucis. The image was carved in 1656 by Pedro de Lugo and Albarracín.
