Monte Alban originated approximately between 700 and 500 BC, but the first human settlements had reached the Oaxaca Valley centuries ago.

The main ethnic group introduced in this area was the predecessor of the direct Zapotecs. The first settlers of the town and the valley were people who had a strong influence from the Gulf Coast Olmecs. One of the first to found a city to stand out was San Jose Mogote, which began to have a big influence on everything and how the predecessor of Monte Alban is considered.

In its first stage, which archaeologists call Monte Alban I (about 700 - 200 BC), begins the ceremonial center, which will fall on top of a hill where three valleys converge, about 500 m. of elevation above the average level of the Oaxaca valley. Its inhabitants will depend on the valley's products, as there are no water sources on the hill and cultivation is not easy.

Towards Monte Albán II (200 BC zero per year) construction begins on the large central square, 600 m wide and 400 m wide. It was a paved square with a stucco floor leveling the top of the hill. Some leverage and natural elevations covered them with buildings.

During the next phase, Monte Alban III (year zero to 700 AD), the ceremonial center of architecture acquires the great development that works.

In recent years, one hypothesis has been reached: the real name of this place is “Cerro Veinte Jaguar”, since the hill seen from one of its flanks resembles this animal, which is an ancient deity of Olmec origin that relates to the land and fertility.

Located 10 kilometers from the state capital of Oaxaca.

Of great interest to visitors are the Hierve el Agua Falls, a natural formation made up of waterfalls that formed thousands of years ago and descend the springs that create a natural pool where you can swim.
