The Los Colorados Fauna and Flora Sanctuary is a small protected area in northern Colombia, but of enormous ecological importance since it protects one of the last native forests that still remain standing in the mountainous area known as Montes de María. of a multitude of monkeys in danger of extinction, in particular of the species of the red monkey, from which it takes its name.

The sanctuary has the name of Loma de Los Colorados because of the abundance of the red (or howler) monkeys that inhabit its interior. The mountain has several peaks (El Escondido, La Leonera, La Plantada, El Yugal, Bongo, Un Solo Horcón, La Gervedera and Tamarindo) and is part of the foothills of the Montes de María (or Serranía de San Jacinto) and includes ecosystems typical of savanna such as tropical dry forest, transition to humid forest and gallery forest. The height of the protected area varies between 180 and 430 meters above sea level.

As it is the only perfectly preserved natural forest for many kilometers around, in addition to being the source of small streams, its conservation depends on the supply of water for the inhabitants of the area and for many wild species. Unfortunately, some inhabitants carry out furtive exploitation of the forests within it, which causes a slow but serious deterioration of the habitat.

It is bounded to the north by the Salvador stream, to the east by the highway to San Jacinto and the urban limit of San Juan, to the south by the Los Cacaos stream, and to the west by the La Rota road and the foothills of the hill.

The climate is warm, with an annual rainfall of 1,500 mm, which causes a water deficit that affects the vegetation for three or four months a year. The average temperature is 27 ° C.

Located in the Loma de Los Colorados. The Loma de Los Colorados is located approximately 9 ° 54´ North and 75 ° 7´ West, about 70 km southeast of Cartagena and 100 of Sincelejo. The small hill is totally included in the department of Bolívar, under the jurisdiction of the municipality of San Juan de Nepomuceno, whose head is part of the protected area.

Petroglyphs, axes and stone utensils have been found in the area, vestiges of the Malibu or Malebú tribes, one of the aboriginal groups that inhabited Colombia at the time of the Spanish conquest.
