The Panches, Pantagoras, Marquetones and Bledos tribes seem to have been the first settlers of this region. They were some of the tribes most feared by the Muiscas. They formed a manorial hierarchical Society directed by a chief.
Towards the middle of the XIX century, a new colonizing and conquering movement of adventurers from Antioquia from the south was presented, towards the jungle slope, in search of lands, wastelands and mines without an owner, in order to be acquired by titles of effort and incorporated into the national economy. This is how a colonized caravan from Antioqueños, led by Isidro Parra, found, going down to the northwest, a valley sown with stout cedars and oaks with a few huts built since 1850, by virtue of the Decree of April 23, 1849, and which the name of Lebanon.
The organization and the symmetrical layout of its urban area began, being configured as a village around 1886. From this moment and until 1900, Lebanon developed as an important village, fighting against the jungle, opening bridle paths in all directions , placing at the end of this period in the category of province that included the current municipalities of Villahermosa, Casabianca, Fresno, Herveo and Santa Isabel, with approximately 1500 to 2000 inhabitants.
The socio-economic development of the region was oriented by its founders towards the exploitation of an important mining power and towards the cultivation of coffee, which has become the characteristic and main element of the Lebanese economy, society and culture.
It is important to note that the city of Lebanon is the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Lebanon-Honda created by S.S. John Paul II on July 26, 1989, by the Bull ´´Ita Yam´´. The territorial area of the diocese covers an area of 3,477 km with approximately 240,000 inhabitants. Its first Bishop was Mons. José Luis Serna Alzate, who took office on October 7, 1989. On February 12, 2005, Mons. José Miguel Gómez Rodríguez, its current bishop, became the third bishop of the Diocese.
