It results from the confluence of four water lines coming from the southern slope of the Serra de Monchique that form this complex estuarine system that integrates dunes, beaches and agricultural lands, semi-natural forest, pine forests and salt marshes, besides sheltering species and habitats of Community interest. The estuary is protected from the ocean by fixed dunes that limit the estuary area with banks of vasa and sand, old salinas, pisciculturas and marshes.
