It was originally created in 1937 as an annex to Los Alerces National Park, then receiving the name of Annex Puelo. Since the enactment of Law No. 19,292, of 1971, Lago Puelo is a park itself, and is administered by the Municipality of the neighboring Los Alerces National Park.

Lago Puelo National Park is the smallest of the Andean-Patagonian Parks. The main body of water in the Park is the Lake that gives it its name. This runs from north to south, presenting a western arm that joins the Interior Lake by means of a short river, located in Chilean territory, and another where the Epuyén River flows. The waters of the Lake have a beautiful bluish green and even light blue color. It gives even more prominence to the region, the neighborhoods of the El Bolsón valley. The diaphanous Río Azul runs through there, which is dominated by the imposing Cerro Piltriquitrón.

Its relief is predominantly mountainous with valleys of glacial origin, which drain their waters to the lower Puelo Lake through the Puelo River, and from there to the Pacific Ocean. Through this valley it has a connection with the Chilean forests, originating from there its great naturalistic interest.

Since the region is only 200 meters above sea level, the temperature is more benign. This can be seen in the summer months, during which there is no frost or snowfall, unlike the other parks in the mountain range.

The particular climatic characteristics of the area create the right conditions for the installation of a unique flora, finding plant species that do not exist or are very scarce in the other parks of Andean Patagonia.

The greatest value of this Park is its vegetation, which includes species that are more frequent in Chile. Among them, trees such as the Guevin or Wild Hazel, the Tique, Urmo and the beautiful Liana Voqui Blanco stand out.

From El Bolsón: 20 km From S.C. from Bariloche: 120 km.

Protect the valley and the area of influence of Lake Puelo, where there are representative plant species of the Chilean trans-Andean forest, which are not found in other Andean-Patagonian national parks.
