Das Dorf São Bento do Ameixial hätte bereits 1258 existiert, wie aus den Informationen des ersten Formos von Estremoz mit dem Namen Aldeia do Penedo hervorgeht.
Laut Túlio Espanca wurde die Pfarrkirche zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts als Anerkennung des Ordens von Avis gegründet, der 1534 kirchlich besucht worden war.

Das heutige Erscheinungsbild entspricht eher den ländlichen Gebäuden des Alentejo aus dem 17. oder 18. Jahrhundert, obwohl die zylindrischen, eckigen Türme des Presbyteriums aus der manuelinischen Zeit erhalten sind.
Es hat zwei seitliche Kreuze zum Haupttor, die aus polychromen Kacheln bestehen, die typisch für das 17. Jahrhundert sind. Von künstlerischem Interesse ist auch die Toilette der Marmorsakristei mit Rollenkränzen mit Wicklung aus dem Jahr 1698.
