Preserve and promote the study and dissemination of the Nemirovsky couple's legacy: their art collection.
To stimulate the interaction of the Foundation's public with art and culture through proposals prepared by curators.
To be a center of excellence dedicated to the dissemination of art and culture and its reflection.
The José e Paulina Nemirovsky Foundation was created in 1987 to preserve and publicize the collection of works of art collected by its founding couple. In addition to bringing to the public one of the most important collections of modern Brazilian art, the institution seeks to encourage reflection on collecting and its importance for the history of art in twentieth century Brazil.
The Foundation's program includes the organization of exhibitions, publications and studies on the collection and on issues related to modern art, the masters of modernism and the conservation of works of art, as well as the development of projects involving collections that dialogue with our . The intention is to divulge not only the artistic legacy that constitutes the Foundation's patrimony, but also to deepen the knowledge about modernism, its historical context and its consequences.
The Foundation is based in the building today called Estação Pinacoteca, designed by Ramos de Azevedo, Brazilian architect responsible for important buildings in the first decades of the twentieth century, in São Paulo. The Foundation, through a loan signed with the São Paulo State Secretariat of Culture, occupies the second floor of the building and maintains two exhibition rooms, a documentation and research and administration center.
The Nemirovsky Foundation's collection comprises about 300 works, including drawings, gouaches, watercolors, prints, paintings and sculptures. Part of them is in permanent exhibition and part in technical reserve specially designed for this purpose. Most of this collection consists of works by masters of Brazilian modernism, including Antropofagia, by Tarsila do Amaral. The collection also houses furniture, carving, painting and imaginary of the colonial period; some examples of modern European art (especially drawings, engravings and glasses) and Brazilian folk art.
In the exhibition space, long-lasting shows coexist with temporary exhibits, creating a dynamic centered on the original collection.
The Reference Center for Brazilian Modern Art is a space dedicated to documentation and research that began with a batch of books and documents belonging to the Nemirovsky couple's residence library. They are publications about modern art, mostly, but also about ancient art. Other books, catalogs and videos about artists and movements are being acquired, maintaining the correlation with the art collection.
The educational program is aimed at teachers and students of all levels, the specialized public and the general public.
