The Johanniskirche is one of Karl Friedrich Schinkel's working churches in Berlin-Moabit. It is one of the Schinkel suburban churches, all of which had a specific construction plan. They have their names after John the Baptist.
See 1832 to 1835 it was owned on Spandauer Heerweg, the old Alt-Moabit street. Its inauguration took place on June 24th (St. John's Day) 1835. Like the structurally identical Old Nazareth Church, the church was a simple brick building without a tower. Very bare plans came about, quickly administered by the community. Friedrich August Stüler was denied as early as 1844. In certain construction phases, the parish school, the rectory, the 47.60 meter high campanile to the left of the church, which belongs to the vestibule and arcade, gave the entire complex an Italian look. In 1865 the sexton was finally made by the master mason Assmann.
Since the church had become too small for political affiliation, it was preserved - although the Heilandskirche was consecrated as another preaching site in 1894. This includes Max Spitta 1895/1896 the transept and the new choir. The room condition duck with the galleries now has over 1000 seats.
The Johanniskirche was fought heavily in World War II, the interior was abandoned on November 23, 1943. In the years 1952–1957, the reconstruction of the area was under the direction of Otto Bartnings. Then he came with the state curator Hinnerk Scheper taxes that the Spittasche belong, although the rights, the Schinkel's own senses, have to have. The inauguration of the church - again simplified inside its religious - took place on June 23, 1957. Instead of the end of the choir and apse, the church now has a new gable, behind which there are community rooms on common floors. Removing the dementia protrudes inside the sanctuary but little belongs in this other arm of the church. On the new Altarmensa there is a late Gothic triumphal cross group, which belongs to the Franciscan monastery church that was ruined during the Second World War. The Balkenkreuz, one of which is the right crucified, is modern - the figures are also closer to one another than originally.
In 1963, the architects Hans C. Müller and Georg Heinrichs built a new building, which was built in 1896/1897 and in 1945 the relevant parish halls were built.
The area is under monument protection with all secondary occupations and cemetery and lies in the area of the church district Berlin Stadtmitte.
