De bouw ervan begon in 1717, buiten de primitieve islamitische perimeter, aan de voormalige gevangenis van het Koninklijk Paleis, met als doel de universiteitsbibliotheek van Coimbra te hosten en werd in 1728 voltooid.
Het heeft een uitgesproken Rococo-stijl en wordt erkend met een van de meest originele en spectaculaire Europese barokke bibliotheken. Naast de onderzoekslocaties van veel wetenschappers, wordt ruimte nog steeds vaak gebruikt voor concerten, tentoonstellingen en andere culturele evenementen.
