Este templo es de estilo neoclásico dórico, con algunos elementos característicos del barroco bávaro, como las torres de ladrillo, que fueron aportados por Toesca, y con en la decoración americanista en las archivoltas.
Resulta parte dominante en la estructura el convento de la orden de los Dominicos, cuyos tres claustros ocupa gran parte de la manzana.
Fue declarada Monumento Histórico Nacional por Decreto Nº 5058 del 6 de julio de 1951.
