Presentation
Bonaire, Saint Eustatius and Saba, also known as the "BES Islands", form the trio of Dutch territories called the Caribbean Netherlands. Formerly one of the constituents of the Netherlands Antilles, it is located in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Venezuela. It is a tranquil island of great beauty. The Indians who inhabited it, the Arawak, called it Bojnay ("lowlands"). It was also populated by groups of Caiquetio Indians. Bonaire's economy is based on tourism. On the island, underwater tourism is very common. The architecture is resort-based and many of them are affiliated with dive companies.
Dutch is the official language of Bonaire because the island is part of the Netherlands.
Main tourist attractions
Much of the island is protected and its marine park offers some of the best diving in the Caribbean. Bonaire's diverse ecosystems include cactus-covered hills, salt marshes, mangroves, coral reefs and sun-drenched beaches. Tips and main tourist attractions:
Bonaire National Marine Park is one of the Caribbean's top diving destinations. The Klein Bonaire islet is famous for its clear water, calm seas and diversity of fish life.
- Washington-Slagbaai National Park, consisting of slopes covered with cacti, mangroves, beaches, sand dunes and salt marshes. The park is best traveled in a four-wheel drive vehicle because of the rugged dirt roads. It is a great place to observe some of the island's many bird species, including flamingos, herons and parakeets, and plant life reflects the arid climate of the island.
- I climbed Brandaris, the highest point of the island, offers a beautiful view of the surroundings. On clear days, you can even glimpse the coast of Venezuela.
- Klein Bonaire, is a flat and uninhabited islet just 800 meters from the concave west coast of Bonaire. White sands, turquoise waters and coral reefs full of marine life, this island is a favorite of scuba divers and snorkelers.
- Lac Bay, is a spot for windsurfing. Soft waters and constant winds create excellent conditions for beginner and advanced windsurfers.
- Mangrove kayaking, the Mangrove Information Center offers guided walks, kayaking and snorkeling through the Lac Bay mangrove forests.
- Kralendijk, which means "coral reef", is the capital of Bonaire and its main port. In Breedestraat, the main shopping street, you can buy art shells, local sculptures, fabrics and clothing. Duty-free shops are also along this stretch, and fishermen sell their catch every morning at the harbor.
- Donkey Sanctuary, a visit to this sanctuary will warm your heart and make you smile.
