Presentation
It is the capital and largest city of Uruguay. Montevideo is located on the south coast of the country, on the northeast bank of the River Plate. Described as "a vibrant and eclectic place with a rich cultural life" and "a thriving technological center of entrepreneurial culture". It is the center of commerce and higher education of Uruguay, as well as its main port. The city is also the financial and cultural center of a larger metropolitan area with a population of about 2 million people.
Weather
The climate is humid and temperate, temperatures vary between 34.6º and 2.6º, and annual average of 16 ° C. Winter is very windy, humid and cloudy. Summer is hot and humid with little wind. In winter, there is often a gust of icy winds and relatively dry continental, cold-wind polar air masses that affect the tranquility of the city. In summer the heat can be annoying when a thunderstorm is approaching; on the other hand, when the weather is good it blows a moderate cooling in the evenings.
Main tourist points
Tourism is responsible for much of Uruguay's economy. Tourism in Montevideo is centered on the Old Town area, which includes the city's oldest buildings, various museums, art galleries and nightclubs, with Sarandí Street and Mercado del Puerto being the most frequented places in the region.
On the outskirts of the Old City, Plaza Independencia is surrounded by many sights, including the Solís Theater and the Salvo Palace; The square also forms one end of 18 de Julho Avenue, the city's most important tourist destination outside the Old Town. In addition to being a shopping street, the avenue is known for art deco buildings, three important public squares, the Gaucho Museum, the Palacio Municipal and many other sights. The avenue leads to the Obelisk of Montevideo. In addition is Batlle Park, which along with Prado Park is another important tourist destination.
Teatro Solís is the most prominent theater in Uruguay and the oldest in South America.
Some of the universities present in Montevideo date back to the nineteenth century, such as the University of the Republic, 1849, and the Labor University of Uruguay, 1878, the Casa de Comedias, 1795, the Solís Theater, 1856, museums such as the National Historical Museum. , the National Museum of Natural History and the Fine Arts, and libraries such as the National Library of Uruguay.
Along the coast, Fortaleza del Cerro, the Rambla (the coastal avenue), 13 kms of sandy beaches and Punta Gorda attract many tourists, as well as the Barrio Sur and Palermo neighborhoods.
Health and vaccination
It is advisable to have the tetanus and triple viral vaccines up to date. Insurance that covers all medical care is advised as the costs of private medicine are high. If you are staying longer in the country, it is recommended that you sign up for a mutual service, private medicine association or subscribe to a medical emergency.
Security
There is a sharp increase in urban violence with thefts and robberies of people, commerce and homes, some with violence.

Visitors to Montevideo are advised to pay special attention to the main tourist attractions such as the "Old Town" and the harbor area in general - especially if you are alone and couples strolling at night, as well as when withdrawing cash from ATMs.

In the face of a robbery you should try to maintain serenity, never react violently and report the incident to the police. Vehicles that remain parked on public roads shall not display any identifiable object or clothing from outside.
Travel documents
Citizens with a valid passport may without visa enter Uruguay and stay for up to 90 days, subject to renewal for an identical period, upon payment of an extension fee of 800 Uruguayan pesos (data from January 2019).
Communications
Uruguay has good national fixed and mobile telephone networks.

Travelers should consult their mobile phone service provider before roaming in Uruguay for roaming service. You can buy mobile phone chips from Antel, Movistar and Claro.

There are several private operators operating in specific fixed network sectors under advantageous conditions. Montevideo has "cyber cafes" and several wireless access points
Official language
The official language is Spanish. In the border areas with Brazil a dialect commonly used "portuñol" is used.
Local currency
The local currency is the Uruguayan peso.
Credit cards are currently accepted and Montevideo has numerous ATMs. Exchange rates are generally more favorable than those of the banking system. The euro is already fully implemented and, in most transactions, easily convertible into national currency.
Gastronomy
Montevideo is synonymous with good gastronomy. From meat to sandwiches, everything we eat is very tasty and cost-effective.
The most traditional dish is parrillada, roasted in a brazier with pieces of meat, sausages, chicken, kids, kidney and chinchulin, the small intestine of the ox.
