Phi Phi Islands
The Phi Phi Islands are located in Thailand between the great island of Phuket and the coast of the Straits of Malacca in the west of the continent. The islands are administratively part of the province of Krabi. Ko Phi Phi Don ("ko" (Thai: meaning) means "island" in Thai language) is the largest island in the group, and is the most populous island in the group. although the beaches of the second largest island, Ko Phi Phi Lee (or "Ko Phi Phi Leh"), are visited by many people as well. The rest of the group's islands, including Bida Nok, Bida Noi and Bamboo Island (Ko Mai Phai), are not much more than large limestone rocks protruding from the sea.

Phi Phi Don was initially populated by Muslim fishermen during the late 1940s, and later became a coconut plantation. The Thai population of Phi Phi Don continues to be more than 80% Muslim. The current population, however, if counting workers, especially the northeast, the mainland is much more Buddhist these days.

Ko Phi Phi was devastated by the Indian Ocean tsunami in December 2004 when almost all of the island's infrastructure was destroyed. As of 2010, most, but not all, have been restored.
Tourism
This island is the largest of the 6 Phi Phi islands and consists of two main sections. It is on Ton Sai where the original inhabitants settled and is now the home of the main accommodation area. Phi Phi Don is quite stunning and has earned the title of one of the most fantastic islands in the world. Nowadays though, with development, the beaches have paid the price and so they're not quite as spectacular as they were in the days of yesteryear. The landscape however, can never be ruined.
Gastronomy
In general, Southern Thai food is renowned for its spiciness. Much of the cuisine has its origins in Malay, Indonesian and Indian food. Favorite dishes from the south include Indian-style Muslim curry (pastaaman), rice noodles in fish curry sauce (Khanom Jeen) and chicken with yellow rice.

Food on Ko Phi Phi is extremely varied, given the diminutive size of the island, but is not as spectacular as it is in Thailand, because most ingredients have to be brought in by boat from the mainland. Reasonably priced and tasty seafood is obviously what most tourists long for when visiting a coastal province like Krabi.
Weather
Weather in the region is desert like - there are only two seasons: the hot season from January to April, and the rainy season from May to December. Temperatures during the year average 25 ° C to 32 ° C (77 ° F to 89.6 ° F) and the yearly rainfall averages 2568.5mm. The rain in this region comes down heavily over short periods.
