Malta
Malta is a southern European country in the Mediterranean Sea. It lies 80 km (50 miles) south of Sicily, 284 km (176 miles) east of Tunisia and 333 km (207 miles) north of Libya. The country covers just over 316 km2, making it one of the smallest and most densely populated countries in the world. The capital of Malta is Valletta, which is also the smallest capital in the EU at 0.8 km2.
Malta is a perfect combination for trips to southern Italy and Sicily. Formed by Malta, Gozo and the smaller islands Filfla, Comino and Cominotto, this small archipelago is full of surprises.
Because of its strategic position in the Mediterranean, midway between Europe and the Arab world, Malta played a leading role at the time of the Crusades. Do not be fooled by the quiet air of the interior: the main island is dotted with archaeological sites, prehistoric remains and multicentennial buildings - all bathed by the beauties of the Mediterranean Sea.

Tourism
Small, surprising and delicious: this is Malta. This Mediterranean island generally is not at the top of the list of travelers, but anyone looking for pleasant temperatures, beautiful scenery, history, culture and blue sea should consider visiting the destination.
Tourism is currently one of the main economic activities of the country. The wide variety of hotels catches the eye, and the most luxurious ones stand on the beaches of the northwestern part of the island of Malta. Beaches, discos and lots of sophistication are part of the tourist route. And good news by European standards, Malta has a fairly reasonable cost. Public transport is cheap and efficient and from the main bus terminal, which is in the capital Valletta, buses run to all regions of the country. Malta also has several pensions, apartments and rental houses with affordable prices.
Perfect beaches, centuries of story to tell, different itinerary options or even exchange destination.
Another prominent place in Malta is the picturesque Medina, also known as the "city of silence". A walk through the narrow streets of this small place with only 300 inhabitants is highly recommended. Between souvenir shops and narrow medieval streets, the traveler can stroll quietly until he reaches the end of the city, where he will find an open field with an interesting panoramic view of the region.
Already in the southern part of the island, small boats give special color to Marsaxlokk, a small fishing village. With several restaurants in front of a bay, the place is famous for offering a varied menu of fresh fish and a relaxing atmosphere. Another attraction is the lively Sunday market that welcomes visitors to this picturesque spot.
In contrast, the bustle of Malta is concentrated in Sant Julian's and Paceville. These two places are famous for the large number of bars, clubs, casinos and hotels. At night, the establishments are crowded mainly by young people and travelers.
Still in the southern part, the Blue Grotto (Blue Grotto) is another tourist attraction. Besides being a tourist spot for snorkelers, the color of the sea in this region is a very intense blue that enchants even those who do not enter the water. On board a small boat travelers can visit the blue grotto, which takes its name because of the color of the water that reflects on its stones.
The other island that is part of the Maltese archipelago is Gozo, which is only 30 minutes by ferry from Malta. Greener and less urbanized, Gozo is a good option for a day trip.
Gastronomy
How could it be otherwise, Maltese cuisine has a strong Mediterranean influence. Pasta, fresh fish, olive oil, olives and cheese are always present at the tables of the country.
One of the typical dishes of the island is the rabbit meat cooked with wine and accompanied by potatoes. In addition, pastizzi (small savory clad) cheese or peas and other puffs are also famous in the country. For those who like cheese, goat cheese with pepper - the product smells strong but is very tasty.
Drinks also gain prominence in Maltese cuisine. An unforgettable delicacy is the Bajtra, a liquor made from the fruit of the cactus. The drink has a rosy hue and a sweet and intense flavor. Another typical drink is the Kinnie soda. Made with bitter orange and herbs, this is one of the proud Maltese. And for beer lovers, do not fail to taste the Maltese Cisk.
Weather
The climate is typically Mediterranean, with average temperatures around 14ºC in winter and 32ºC in summer. The sun shines for 300 days a year and the Maltese beaches are a mesmerizing blue tone. Highlight for small Anchor Bay, and for Golden Bay, Mellieha and Saint Paul, beaches much sought after by European tourists. The region is also well suited for those who enjoy diving: in summer, the average water temperature is 23 ° C. And do not worry about the local receptivity: the Maltese people are friendly and have a warm soul, characteristics typical of the peoples of the Mediterranean.
