The Grand Canal forms the largest waterway of the city's traffic. Public transportation is provided by vaporetti and water taxis.
Cutting most of the city, it has its "beginning" in the lagoon near the train station, making a big "S" curve through the central districts, the sestieri, and ends next to the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, near Piazza San Marco. It has an average depth of five meters.
Due to the concentration of most of the traffic, there are four bridges: the Academia Bridge, the Rialto Bridge (the most famous), the Bridge of the Barefoot and the Bridge of the Constitution (designed by Santiago Calatrava).
People can take a walk through the canal, either by means of covered ferries, called there by vaporetto, or by means of gondolas.
Its banks are adorned by some of the most beautiful buildings of the city, among many palazzi are Palazzi Barbaro, Ca 'Rezzonico, Ca' d'Oro, Palazzo Dario, Ca 'Foscari, Palazzo Barbarigo and Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, which houses the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. The churches along the Canal include the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute and the Church of the Redeemer.
