Farina gegenüber is a perfume house, founded in Cologne, Germany, in 1707 by Johann Maria Farina (1685-1766). It is the oldest perfume factory in the world.

Johann Maria Farina named her perfume eau de cologne (cologne) in honor of her adopted city. He caused Cologne to become known worldwide as a city of perfumes. The city of Cologne pays homage to its illustrious citizen through a figure in the town hall tower.

In a letter written in 1708, Johann Maria Farina describes her perfume as follows: „My perfume makes you think of a beautiful spring dawn after the rain; a composition of oranges, lemons, grapefruits, bergamot, flowers and fruits from my native country. Three of these houses survived. Today, the original eau de cologne is still produced by the eighth generation of the descendants of Johann Maria Farina.

Farina gegenüber literally means „Farina ahead“. This is the abbreviation for „Johann Maria Farina gegenüber dem Jülichs-Platz“, which in German means „Johann Maria Farina in front of Jülichs square“.
