The Deichtorhallen Hamburg are one of the largest exhibition halls for political art and photography in Europe. The two historic buildings from 1911/13 impress with their open steel glass architecture and today offer space for spectacular international large-scale exhibitions. Since 2011, the two buildings at the transition from the Hamburg Art Mile to the Hafencity have been dependency in Hamburg-Harburg with the Falckenberg collection.
Between 1911 and 1914, the Deichtorhallen on the grounds of the Berlin train station, the Hamburg counterpart to the "Hamburger Bahnhof" in Berlin, were used as market halls. They represent one of the personal views of industrial architecture from the transition period from Art Nouveau to the expressions of the 20th century. The two halls are open steel structures: the legal hall and the three-aisled long building with 3800 square meters, the southern hall (1800 square meters) and the central building with lantern.
After the personal use as a market hall, the architect Josef Paul Kleihues authorized the restoration of the two halls to become an exhibition center for art and the redesign of the outdoor area.
The Deichtorhallen were restored by the Körber Foundation and are owned by the City of Hamburg. In 1989 she was helped by the Deichtorhallen-Ausstellung GmbH. On November 9, 1989, Harald Szeemann's exhibition "Einlicht" marks the international art exhibition program in the halls. In the course of its history, the Deichtorhallen Hamburg have belonged to an exhibition house for photography and political art with three institutional pillars - three houses under one umbrella brand.
Since 2009, Dr. Dirk Luckow director of the Deichtorhallen Hamburg, died and twins with commercial director Bert Antonius Kaufmann conditions.
