On the island there is a funerary monument from Roman times, which gives us to understand the antiquity of its inhabitants, but from the neighborhood itself, a specific date of creation or settlement is not known.
There is written knowledge of its existence since before 1810, since Spain was immersed in the War of Independence against Napoleon, the members of the Seville Board, already integrated into the Supreme Central Board, which would later promulgate the Constitution of Cadiz in Cádiz. In 1812, popularly known as La Pepa, they took refuge on the Isla de Canela, attracted by its difficult access and its proximity to the Portuguese border. With the taking of Seville on January 31, 1810 by the French, the Military Academy of Seville became a battalion, with Mariano Gil de Bernabé at the head of it, heading towards Niebla to reach Isla Canela, Ayamonte with the order to put the public funds managed by the Supreme Central Board at that time were well protected. In Ayamonte the Academy was officially dissolved on February 11.
Nowadays and with the rise of tourism in the area, the neighborhood barely manages to maintain its maritime and family atmosphere that characterizes it.
The Isla Canela neighborhood is located to the south of Ayamonte, Huelva, the city to which it belongs, and from which it is separated by a stretch of sea just 300 meters wide, delimited by the Spanish shore of the Guadiana river. it is a merely marine neighborhood. Its name gives origin to that of the island where it is located, between the rivers Guadiana (border with Portugal) and Carreras (with Isla Cristina).
