The Chinijo archipelago is a group of islands found to the northeast of the Canary Islands, off the southern coast of Morocco. It is made up of the larger islands of Montaña Clara, Alegranza and La Graciosa (the only one inhabited with 648 inhabitants, National Institute of Statistics 2008), as well as the small islets of Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste. The name comes from the local word chinijo, which means "small", alluding to its status as a mini-archipelago within the Canary Islands.
It is located on a wide underwater platform less than one hundred meters deep, although at some points it can reach two hundred meters. It has about 19,270 hectares that belong to the Lanzarote municipality of Teguise, in the province of Las Palmas.
It has the protected areas of the Integral Natural Reserve of Los Islotes and the Natural Park of the Chinijo Archipelago. The park took its status as a protected area in 1986, and was reclassified and recognized as a Special Protection Area for birds in 1994.
This archipelago is the largest marine reserve in Europe with 700 square kilometers
