Il occupe une position dominante sur une colline escarpée, intégrant la défense composée par les châteaux de Monforte, Campo Maior et Ouguela, au cours du Moyen Âge. Actuellement, il est abonné à la zone touristique et promotionnelle des plaines.
Le château a fait l'objet de travaux de restauration générale effectués par le pouvoir public en 1939. Il est classé bien d'intérêt public par décret du 18 juillet 1957.
De propriété privée, le château peut être visité quotidiennement, constituant la clé de la paroisse de Veiros.
