Cape Town is famous for its natural harbor, including well-known landmarks such as Mesa Mountain and Mesa Bay, being one of the most popular national tourist destinations.
Located on the coast of Table Bay, Cape Town was used by the Dutch East India Company as a station for Dutch ships sailing to East Africa, India and the Far East. Jan van Riebeeck arrived in the region on 6 April 1652 and established the first permanent European settlement in South Africa. Cape Town developed rapidly, becoming the economic and cultural hub of the Cape Colony. Until the gold fever of the Witwatersrand, which resulted in the development of Johannesburg, Cape Town was the most populous South African city.
The city is an important commercial and industrial center, having one of the main ports of the country. Its economy is based in the refining sectors of oil, automobiles, food, chemical, textile and shipbuilding. Consequently, it is considered the second largest financial, economic and commercial center of South Africa, behind only Johannesburg.
