Gone are the days when museums were seen only as mere deposits of junk and old things. Today, these spaces are true guardians of the history of a people and daily attract hundreds of people to visit.

In São Luís, one of these spaces is the Cafua das Mercês or Museu do Negro, which currently houses the center for the preservation of black memory. The house has a collection that tells a little about the history of arduous life imposed on slaves who lived in our city at the end of the 18th century.

Among the variety of pieces on display at the museum, the objects of worship used in religious ceremonies such as statuettes, gourds, pipes and mine drum sets stand out. Preservation instruments are also preserved, reminiscent of the suffering experienced by blacks from Africa who arrived in Maranhão - to quote the world-turner, a rectangular piece of wood, opened in two halves, with holes, where the wrists and ankles were placed. slaves and closed with a large screw or padlocks arranged at one end. Paddles, used as a pedagogical and torture method, iron chokers and various ornaments are also part of the museum's permanent collection.
