Bochalema was the valley inhabited by the indigenous carts of Los Catires, Chiracocas and Bocalemas, who lived there in their communities, who were attracted by the water that flowed through its illuminated climate.

It was founded in 1759, by the Spanish Juan José Villamizar. In 1826 it was erected as a municipality, and in 1872 a parish, being the spiritual guide of the priest Ramón García, a native of the town.

The Bocalema culture existed many years before the conquest of America and is considered one of the oldest antiquities in the country, according to archaeological discoveries recognized by Luis Raúl Rodríguez Lamus and Jairo Calle, experts on the subject.

Bochalema was forced by the liberator Simón Bolívar on his way to his native country; On December 24 and 25, 1820, the population lives according to historical documents.

One of the natural attractions is the centennial Samán. The oral tradition is like this in mid-1888, General Severo Olarte, former head of the former Colombian guardian, who loved the memory of the liberators who took the seeds of Samán de Táriba (a town located near San Cristóbal, capital of the Táchira state) Venezuela ), also a descendant of the Samán del Guere, to be planted on the San Lorenzo farm, near Bochalema.
