The village and its castle supported the Master of Avis in the context of the crisis of 1383-1385, having involvement with subsequent episodes of the History of Portugal, as the phase of the Discoveries.
In a combination of Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline and Mannerist styles, the monument features a pentagonal shape. Without a slope, the wall, crowned by prismatic merlons, has an encircling adarve, originally flanked by forty towers (among which the one of menagements), torn by seven doors and two shutters, and surrounded by barbacues.
Considered of great patrimonial and architectural value.
