Dominating a gentle rise in the plains northwest of the city of Beja, this monument associates with the military function of residence, which is why some authors prefer to classify it as a fortified palace.
The Tower of Menagem, originally higher than the set, presents / displays a square plan, in three floors: a ground floor and two superiors, where they tear meshed windows.
Recovered, the dependencies of the castle are requalified, constituting since 1993 one of the establishments of the network Pousadas de Portugal under the name Pousada do Castelo de Alvito.
